Nexus Mods, the largest site for downloading mods for games like Fallout, has been experiencing significant performance issues over the past week due to an explosion of traffic related to the Fallout series.
The site's struggles can be directly attributed to the success of the new Fallout series on Amazon Prime. The show's instant hit status has sparked a surge of interest in modding the Fallout games, compounded by recent sales offering deep discounts on the games.
According to Nexus Mods, Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas have seen massive spikes in downloads, with peaks reaching 24 million total file downloads per day – more than double the site's normal daily traffic of 10 million downloads. Between Friday and Sunday alone, the site served over 6,300 terabytes of mod data, equivalent to downloading the entire Skyrim Special Edition game twice every second for several days.
While Nexus Mods typically has sufficient capacity to handle more than double its bandwidth needs, the team acknowledged that they cannot provide an infinite, fully scalable solution to meet such large, short-term spikes in demand due to the prohibitive costs involved.
The site is anticipating another busy weekend and will be deploying extra resources and closely monitoring uptime and performance across the network. Any issues will be communicated through the service status page and Discord.
Despite the challenges, Nexus Mods expressed gratitude for the patience of its users and excitement at welcoming both new and returning mod enthusiasts to the site during this Fallout renaissance.
