JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the leading developer of microelectronics standards, has announced the publication of the JESD79-5C DDR5 SDRAM standard. This crucial update introduces several key enhancements aimed at boosting performance, reliability, and security for next-generation technologies across various applications, from high-performance servers to emerging fields like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Among the most notable additions is the innovative Per-Row Activation Counting (PRAC) feature, designed to improve DRAM data integrity. PRAC precisely monitors DRAM activations at the wordline level. When an excessive number of activations is detected, the system is alerted to pause traffic and initiate mitigative measures. This coordinated approach between the DRAM and the system provides an accurate and predictable way to address data integrity challenges.
Furthermore, the updated standard expands the definition of timing parameters from 6800 Mbps to 8800 Mbps, incorporates DRAM core timings and Tx/Rx AC timings up to 8800 Mbps, introduces Self-Refresh Exit Clock Sync for I/O Training Optimization, includes Dual-Die Package (DDP) timings, and addresses security concerns by deprecating Partial Array Self Refresh (PASR).
"The collaborative efforts of JEDEC's JC-42 Committee for Solid State Memory have advanced the DDR5 standard," said Mian Quddus, JEDEC Board of Directors Chairman. "Groundbreaking new features in JESD79-5C are intended to support ever-evolving industry demands for security, reliability, and performance in a wide range of applications."
Christopher Cox, JC-42 Committee Chair, added, "Work is underway to incorporate the comprehensive PRAC solution for ensuring DRAM data integrity into other DRAM product families within JEDEC."
The JESD79-5C DDR5 SDRAM standard is now available for download from the JEDEC website.
