Revolutionizing Classic Game Remasters with NVIDIA's RTX Remix
In the ever-evolving world of PC gaming, modding has become a phenomenon, with over 10 billion game mods downloaded each year. These modifications not only enhance graphics but also breathe new life into games by introducing new content and expanding their player base. NVIDIA, a pioneer in graphics technology, is now taking modding to the next level with the introduction of NVIDIA RTX Remix.
What is RTX Remix?
NVIDIA RTX Remix is a groundbreaking platform built on NVIDIA Omniverse, empowering modders to remaster their favorite classic games with cutting-edge features. The tool enables modders to effortlessly capture game assets, enhance materials using generative AI tools, and create stunning remasters with full ray tracing and DLSS 3.
The Remix platform consists of two components: an application for creating lights and adding remastered assets into a game scene, and a runtime for capturing classic game scenes and injecting remastered assets back into the game during playback. With the release of the RTX Remix application in Open Beta, the power to create next-level RTX mods is now in the hands of experienced modders.

Open Beta Release
Modders can now dive into the world of RTX Remix as the platform enters its Open Beta phase. This beta version is available for free, allowing modders to access the full capabilities of RTX Remix. To get started, simply download the Omniverse Launcher, find RTX Remix on the "exchange" tab, and install it.
Community-Driven Remasters
RTX Remix has already demonstrated its capabilities with remarkable remasters of classic games. NVIDIA's own Portal received the RTX treatment, as did the modder-created Portal: Prelude RTX. Orbifold Studios is pushing the boundaries further by using RTX Remix to develop "Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project," a community-driven remaster of the iconic game.
RTX Remix is not limited to specific titles. Built as part of the NVIDIA Studio suite of tools for creators, it serves as a platform for remastering fixed function pipeline DirectX 8 and 9 games. Popular titles like Call of Duty 2, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Garry's Mod, Freedom Fighters, Need for Speed Underground 2, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines are just a few examples. For a comprehensive list of compatible games and technical information, modders can visit ModDB's Remix community resources.
As an exciting example of what RTX Remix can achieve, modders on ModDB are actively working on "Need for Speed: Underground 2 Remix." This graphics overhaul mod aims to bring the game's visuals up to contemporary standards using NVIDIA's RTX Remix technology. The 1.7GB Mod is usable and downloadable at ModDB with some limitations like Player and opponent cars having a matte material; neons and other colored lights may appear as white; as well as some light pop-in issues.
