Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer behind the critically praised Baldur's Gate 3, has announced its departure from the Dungeons & Dragons universe. In a statement made during the Game Developers Conference (GDC), CEO Swen Vinke revealed that the studio has no plans to create downloadable content (DLC), expansions, or a sequel for their highly successful Baldur's Gate 3.
"We are a company of big ideas. We are not a company that's made to create DLCs or expansions," Vinke stated. "We tried that actually, a few times. It failed every single time. It's not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very large."
Despite the immense popularity and commercial success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios has decided to move in a new direction, leaving the beloved Dungeons & Dragons universe behind. Vinke acknowledged the studio's deep affection for the Baldur's Gate series but emphasized their desire to explore uncharted territories.
"Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our hearts. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not going to continue in it. We're not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We're not going to make Baldur's Gate 4 which everybody is expecting us to do," he said. "We're going to move on. We're going to move away from D&D and we're going to start making a new thing."
Larian Studios' decision to forge a new path comes on the heels of their remarkable accomplishments with Baldur's Gate 3. The game was recently honored with four prestigious awards at the GDC Awards, including the coveted Game of the Year award, cementing its status as a masterpiece in the role-playing genre.
