AMD Announces FSR 3.1 with Upscaling Quality Improvements, FSR 3 Now Available in 40 Games

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024, AMD unveiled the latest update to its open upscaling and advanced frame generation technology, AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) 3.1. This new version brings significant improvements and new capabilities.

Key Highlights of AMD FSR 3.1

  • Upscaling Image Quality Improvements:
    • Improved temporal stability at rest and in motion, reducing flickering, shimmering, and "fizziness" around moving objects.
    • Reduced ghosting and better preservation of detail.
  • Decoupling FSR 3 Upscaling from Frame Generation:
    • Allows FSR 3.1 frame generation technology to work with other upscaling solutions.
  • New AMD FidelityFX API:
    • Easier for developers to debug and enables forward compatibility with updated versions of FSR.
  • Vulkan® and Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) Support.

AMD FSR 3.1 will be available for developers on GPUOpen in Q2 2024 and will be coming to games later this year.

FSR 3.1 Upscaling Quality Improvement Examples

The first announced game to receive AMD FSR 3.1 is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart from Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game update will add the improvements of FSR 3.1, including decoupling frame generation from upscaling and enabling its use with other upscaling solutions. Examples showcasing the upscaling improvements in temporal stability and ghosting reduction were provided.

Recommendations for AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation Use

When using FSR 3 Frame Generation with any upscaling quality mode or the "Native AA" mode, AMD recommends running at a minimum of ~60 FPS before Frame Generation is applied for an optimal high-quality gaming experience and to mitigate latency. Additionally, with a VRR display, it is suggested to keep the framerate (with frame generation enabled) within the monitor's refresh range to prevent screen tearing.
