Apple's M4: Next-Gen Chip Enables Stunning iPad Pro Display, AI Power

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA (May 7, 2024) - Apple today announced the M4, the company's latest custom silicon chip that will power the all-new iPad Pro. Built using second-generation 3-nanometer technology, the M4 is a system on a chip (SoC) that advances the industry-leading power efficiency of Apple silicon.

The M4 features an entirely new display engine that enables the stunning precision, color, and brightness of the breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display on the new iPad Pro. It has a new CPU with up to 10 cores, consisting of four performance cores and six efficiency cores, delivering up to 1.5 times faster performance than the previous M2 chip.

The 10-core GPU in the M4 builds on the next-generation GPU architecture introduced in the M3 family. It brings hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to iPad for the first time, enabling more realistic shadows, reflections, and visually complex scenes in games and graphics-intensive apps. Pro rendering performance in apps like Octane is up to four times faster than on the M2.

Apple's fastest Neural Engine to date is also part of the M4, capable of up to 38 trillion operations per second – faster than any AI PC's neural processing unit today. It enables advanced AI features like real-time audio captions and object identification in videos and photos.

The M4's Media Engine supports popular video codecs and brings hardware acceleration for AV1 to iPad, providing more power-efficient playback of high-resolution video streaming.

"The new iPad Pro with M4 is a great example of how building best-in-class custom silicon enables breakthrough products," said Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. "The power-efficient performance of M4, along with its new display engine, makes the thin design and game-changing display of iPad Pro possible."

Compared to the latest PC chips, the M4 can deliver the same performance using just a fourth of the power. This improved energy efficiency helps the new iPad Pro meet Apple's high standards and deliver all-day battery life.
