When ASUS Republic of Gamers unveiled the ROG Ally X on June 2nd, the next iteration of its popular handheld Windows gaming PC promised major upgrades over the previous model. Now that full details have been released, let's take a look at what's new and improved with the Ally X:
More Powerful Internals
While the Ally X retains the powerful AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Extreme processor from the original, it doubles down on RAM and storage. Memory sees a huge boost from 12GB to 24GB of blazing-fast LPDDR5X-7500, providing ample headroom for the GPU. Storage gets a capacity upgrade to 1TB thanks to a speedy M.2 NVMe SSD, with an M.2 2280 slot that allows for easy future expansions.
Longer Battery Life
One of the biggest improvements is battery life. The Ally X packs a hefty 80Wh battery, double the capacity of its predecessor. This massive upgrade allows for much longer unplugged gaming sessions away from a power outlet. Impressively, ROG managed to incorporate this larger battery while keeping the Ally X's weight at just 678g through optimized weight distribution.
Improved Cooling
To handle the thermal demands of the powerful hardware, cooling performance has been dramatically enhanced. The new thermal solution employs redesigned compact high-airflow fans, a third exhaust vent, and reengineered airflow tunnels. Together, these improvements enable a 24% increase in air volume compared to the original Ally, allowing the internals and 7-inch display to run up to 6°C cooler under load.
Refined Ergonomics
The Ally X sports a refreshed ergonomic design with deeper hand grips, repositioned macro keys, and slanted triggers to reduce hand fatigue during marathon gaming sessions. The joysticks have been upgraded to new modules with an impressive 5 million cycle lifespan, while a new enhanced 8-way D-Pad offers greater precision for fighting games and retro titles. Connectivity also sees an upgrade with dual USB-C ports, one of which supports Thunderbolt for docks and eGPUs.
While the brilliant 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display with 100% sRGB, 500 nits brightness, and FreeSync Premium tech remains unchanged, the updated Armoury Crate SE 1.5 software brings a revamped customizable game library interface and integrated driver/BIOS update functionality.
With these substantial upgrades to performance, battery life, cooling, and ergonomics, the 2024 ROG Ally X looks to build upon the solid foundation of the original and elevate the handheld Windows gaming experience to new heights.
