AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) Emerges from Preview, Unleashing Remarkable FPS Boosts in Radeon Adrenalin 24.1.1 Driver

AMD has officially launched the fully developed version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) through the Radeon Adrenalin 24.1.1 driver, promising an up to 97% increase in frames per second (FPS) at 1080p resolution. AFMF, a frame generation technology integrated directly into the AMD Software driver, aims to revolutionize gaming performance by enhancing frame rates and ensuring smoother in-game movement.

The AFMF technology is not only a standalone feature but is seamlessly integrated into HYPR-RX2, enabling gamers to effortlessly boost FPS and responsiveness by simply enabling HYPR-RX. This inclusion of AFMF within HYPR-RX provides an automatic activation of performance-oriented features, further elevating the gaming experience.

Unparalleled Performance Gains with AFMF

AFMF is designed to enhance the gaming experience by incorporating frame generation technology into AMD Radeon™ 700M, RX 6000, and RX 7000 series GPUs for both notebook and desktop platforms. According to AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Release Notes:

  • Up to a 97% average increase in performance across select titles at 1080p resolution when AFMF is enabled and upscaled with FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) at Quality Mode on the Radeon™ RX 7600XT GPU.
  • A remarkable 103% average increase in performance across select titles at 1440p resolution under similar conditions on the Radeon™ RX 7600XT GPU.

AFMF achieves these performance boosts while dynamically disabling frame generation during fast visual motion to preserve image quality.

System Requirements and Additional Driver Highlights

For gamers looking to leverage AFMF, the requirements include RDNA™ 3 architecture-based products or newer, such as the Radeon™ RX 6000 and 7000 series GPUs, and the 700M-based APUs. The software prerequisites include AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 and above, supporting only DX11 and DX12 titles on Windows 10 and 11.

The driver update also brings several additional enhancements:

  • AMD Video Upscaling: An advanced video upscale algorithm improves video playback image quality for AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 desktop series GPUs. This feature supports upscaling for DirectX 11 applications with resolutions up to 4K.

  • Content Adaptive Machine Learning (CAML): Text detection has been updated to support up to 4K gaming for greater clarity.

  • AMD Smart Technology Tab: A convenient location to access the suite of A+A features for maximizing the power of AMD-powered systems.

  • AMD Assistant: Automatically enables or disables AMD Software features based on various situations for improved performance or battery life.

Issues Addressed and What to Know About AFMF

The driver update addresses several fixed issues, such as performance drops in certain workloads and intermittent grey screens after driver upgrades. However, it's important to note that AFMF, while providing significant performance gains, may introduce additional latency to games. For optimal results, AMD recommends combining AFMF with AMD Radeon™ Anti-Lag to reduce in-game latency while maintaining a minimum FPS of 60.

Gamers are advised to manually enable AFMF in per-game settings for certain fast-paced competitive titles and utilize the default hotkey (Alt-Shift-G) for on-the-fly toggling. For a better visual experience, AFMF is recommended to be used with Variable Refresh Rate enabled.

AMD promises continued enhancements and innovations in future updates, focusing on elevating image quality, smoothness, and latency with AFMF under HYPR-RX.

With the full release of AMD Fluid Motion Frames in the Radeon Adrenalin 24.1.1 driver, AMD has opened the door to a new era of gaming performance. AFMF's integration into HYPR-RX2 and its impressive FPS gains at different resolutions underscores AMD's commitment to delivering cutting-edge technologies to gamers. As the gaming community eagerly embraces these advancements, AMD continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of graphics and gaming.
