Steam Hardware & Software Survey Reveals User Trends for March 2024

The latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey, conducted monthly by Valve Corporation, offers a glimpse into the systems and configurations favored by Steam users as of March 2024. The survey data highlights several key trends among the gaming platform's user base.

Operating System Dominance

Windows maintains its position as the leading operating system among Steam users, accounting for an impressive 96.67% share. Within the Windows ecosystem, the 64-bit versions of Windows 10 (54.40%) and Windows 11 (41.61%) are the most prevalent. While macOS and Linux hold smaller shares at 1.38% and 1.94% respectively, their presence in the Steam community is noteworthy.

System RAM and CPU Specifications

When it comes to system RAM, 16GB (47.70%) and 32GB (29.29%) capacities are the most commonly used configurations. Regarding CPU specifications, Intel processors with clock speeds ranging from 2.3GHz to 2.99GHz (37.10%) are the most popular among Steam users. Notably, systems with 6 physical CPUs (34.81%) are the most common CPU core configuration.

Video Card Landscape

NVIDIA maintains a strong presence in the video card market among Steam users. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (6.71%) emerges as the most widely used graphics card, followed closely by the RTX 2060 (3.98%), GTX 1650 (3.95%), RTX 3060 Ti (3.93%), and RTX 3070 (3.86%).

VRAM and Display Resolutions

In terms of video RAM (VRAM), 8GB (35.17%) and 12GB (18.32%) capacities are the most prevalent among Steam users. For display resolutions, the ubiquitous 1920 x 1080 (58.45%) remains the most widely used primary display resolution, while multi-monitor setups favor the 3840 x 1080 (58.26%) resolution.

Language and Storage Preferences

The survey data reveals that Simplified Chinese (33.43%) and English (32.54%) are the most widely spoken languages among Steam users. Regarding storage, most users report having between 100GB and 499GB (41.77%) of free hard drive space, with the majority (57.97%) boasting a total hard drive capacity exceeding 1TB.

VR Headset Adoption

Among Steam users with VR support (18.2%), the Oculus Quest 2 (37.84%) and Meta Quest 3 (15.03%) are the most popular virtual reality headsets, indicating a strong presence of Meta's (formerly Oculus) VR offerings in the Steam ecosystem.
