Microsoft Expands AI Hardware Support in DirectML

Direct Machine Learning (DirectML) is a low-level API from Microsoft that allows developers to leverage hardware acceleration for machine learning inference workloads. It works across DirectX 12-compatible GPUs and other hardware.

The latest DirectML 1.13.1 developer preview adds initial support for neural processor units (NPUs), a type of AI accelerator, on new Windows 11 PCs featuring  Intel® Core™ Ultra processor with Intel AI Boost. This allows more on-device AI capabilities by tapping into dedicated AI hardware.

Support for NPUs comes through collaboration between Microsoft, Intel, and Samsung. Samsung stated that "DirectML is one of the most efficient ways for Samsung’s developers to make [AI] experiences for Windows."

The release enables a subset of pre-optimized models to run on NPUs. More models and expanded performance are planned for future versions.

Broader hardware support in DirectML is an important step towards bringing performant and efficient AI experiences across Windows devices. As dedicated AI silicon becomes more prevalent in client devices, Microsoft's machine learning API allows developers to easily tap into these capabilities across CPUs, GPUs, and now specialized AI chips. This provides faster and higher-quality experiences to end users.
