Making PCs Smarter Using Intel's Neural Processing Units

At the 2023 Intel Innovation event, Intel outlined its vision for artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced PCs that deliver more personalized, streamlined, and intuitive experiences directly on the device.

The key enabler is Intel's new Core Ultra platform featuring dedicated onboard neural processing units (NPUs) for AI inferencing without cloud connectivity. NPUs provide specialized acceleration to handle AI workloads efficiently alongside the CPU and GPU.

Intel aims to ship 100 million AI-capable PCs using Core Ultra by 2025. Over 300 AI-accelerated features spanning everyday tasks like content creation, meetings, and security are already in development through Intel's collaboration with independent software vendors.

For consumers, the promise is PCs that can automatically generate briefings, meeting notes, creative assets, and more customized to individual contexts and data. Intel says seamless AI integration will profoundly enhance how people get things done.
